Freestyle Libre 2 and 3 Are Being Phased Out: How to Switch to Libre 3+

Abbott is discontinuing their FreeStyle Libre 2 and 3 continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) on September 30, 2025.

This will impact all users. After that date, they won’t be available in pharmacies or your mail-order sites. So let’s briefly go over what they’re moving to, how this affects you, and what your next steps are.

Why Is Abbott Discontinuing the Freestyle Libre 2 and 3?

They’ve got new models out!

Users will be encouraged to switch from Libre 2 to a Libre 2+ or if you’re using the Libre 3, switch to a Libre 3+

The company made these upgrades to make sensors compatible with automated insulin pumps, be used by younger children with diabetes (2 years old and up), and they last for 15 days now.

What Happens After September 30, 2025?

The older devices will no longer be shipped or sold from pharmacies. You’ll be out of luck if you don’t have an updated prescription.

Abbott will continue providing customer support for the older CGMs.

What Is the Libre 3+ and How Is It Different?

For the average user, there will be little difference. But for a person dependent on insulin, it will be compatible with their insulin pump. Other than that, it will last one extra day and behave much the same way.

How are the Libre 3 and 3+ the Same?

  • The price is the same*

  • They use the same app or reader as the old model.

  • Medicare coverage is the same

  • Almost everything else is the same.

How to Switch from Libre 2 or Libre 3 to Libre 3+

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Contact your prescriber

  2. Request an updated prescription for Libre 3+

  3. Confirm that your pharmacy or durable medical equipment(DME) provider is ready to fill the new order

    Prescription Codes:

    FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor: NRC# 57599-0844-00

    or

    FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor: NRC# 57599-0835-00

I personally like the Libre 3+ because there’s no scanning involved. The data is sent to your phone automatically.

How can I get a lower price for the Libre 3+?

    Two ways, my friend.

First, Abbott has a savings program that helps you pay no more than $75 for 2 sensors. Call them at 844-330-5535 to see if you qualify.

Second, you can apply for a free trial if you’re new to the FreeStyle Libre. If you qualify (and I’ll just bet you will), they’ll send you a coupon to get your first sensor free!

FAQs About the Libre 3+ Transition

  • Can I still use my Libre 2 until it expires? Yes, even after September 30th, customer service will support your remaining sensors.

  • Will insurance cover the Libre 3+? Yes, insurance coverage will not change.
