Add CGM to your clinical toolbox

Metabolic dysfunction is a piece of nearly all the chronic diseases we face. As dietitians, nutritionists, health coaches, chiropractors, nurses, PAs and doctors, we have a tool that helps our patients start REVERSING that metabilic dysfunction right away. It’s a continuous glucose monitor.

Off-label use of CGM

“Off label” refers to the prescribing of drugs or devices for conditions they have not been approved for by the FDA. It’s a routine practice. For example, metformin is ONLY approved for patients with type 2 diabetes. Yet is is rountinely (and successfully) used for pre-diabetes. It’s also covered by insurance! So it’s reasonable to use a device like a CGM similarly. Why NOT take advantage of this tool to prevent disease?

Dietitians, nutritionists, health coaches, nurses and prescribers… this is your guide to using continuous glucose monitors (CGM) off-label to PREVENT diabetes and other chronic diseases AFFORDABLY and use it as a tool for…

  • Education

  • Assessment

  • Accountability

Using a CGM requires support to use the data in a way that leads to health improvement.

When you can help your clients optimize their use, the results come quickly. No more waiting 3 months to see if blood sugar is better. CGM gives you immediate feedback 24/7, which means we repeat beneficial habits more frequently.

I have a variety of ways for you to learn more about off-label use of CGM.

We support the FreeStyle Libre 14-day or Libre2 CGM products from Abbott

We find these to be the most economical CGM’s allowing greater access to the technology and they work great for education and accountability with our blood sugar goals. (Note: we do not SELL them. Clients obtain them from the pharmacy.)

*We do NOT work for or represent Abbott or have any affiliation with them.

FAQs

  • Yes! But not insurance coverage. So most doctors are happy to write you a prescription for this once they learn you are ready to start taking an active role in your health. We help you with that process.

  • It depends. We support using the FreeStyle Libre CGMs which typically cost around $40 for each sensor that lasts for 2 weeks.

  • Maybe. But the cash price is about $40/2 weeks. Most people only use them for 1-3 months, so consider it a good investment. Some private insurers will cover some of your costs even if you are not using insulin. Nearly all carriers plus medicare will cover them if you are using insulin.

  • Yes! That’s a perfect time to do it. We believe in disease prevention and using a CGM will tell you clearly what foods spike your blood sugar helping you to PREVENT diabetes and related diseases.

  • We have 2 on-demand programs which you can start anytime. But the “Hack Your Blood Sugar” program runs about every 3-4 months. We recommend you get on the waiting list for this to be the first notified and to get access to materials that will start you on your journey while you wait.

  • Yes! They are designed to stay on and function during a 30-minute swim without any extra protection. Avid swimmers tend to purchase (inexpensive) covers for them for extra insurance.

  • No. The way our programs are set up, all the content is recorded for you to watch on-demand if you can’t make a class. Also, you can share your data in real-time with us so we can check your progress and give you feedback on our private group feed!

  • Yes. We support many people with type 2 diabetes. This is not a replacement for diabetes education for your insulin use. But we help people with type 2 get better control of their blood sugar to reduce or prevent insulin use.

  • As you know, type 1 and type 2 diabetes are totally different conditions which unfortunately share the same name. Because folks with T1D are typically eligible for full coverage for their CGMs, it’s recommended you use a Dexcom. However, we would be happy to help you get set up with a FreeStyle Libre. Just know that we are not trained to help you learn how to use your CGM for dosing insulin. That will need to come from your diabetes educator. You may want to book a free call so we can chat about it and look at your options.

  • Not typically! It works by inserting a short, fine filament a few millimeters into your skin. The applicator we use makes that simple and painless.
