How to Get Affordable Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) Without a Prescription

Managing blood sugar has become easier and more affordable thanks to the accessibility of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) without needing a prescription. These devices help you quickly gain control over your blood sugar, and now, there are more affordable options available in the U.S.

As a functional nutritionist, I’ve helped many people regain control of their blood sugar using CGMs. Let me share the different ways you can access these helpful devices, whether through a prescription or over-the-counter.

Traditional Method: Getting a CGM Through a Doctor’s Prescription

The traditional method for getting a CGM involves working with your doctor to obtain a prescription. For my clients in one-on-one or group programs, I typically recommend the Libre 3, as it’s one of the most affordable CGMs available via prescription. While the Dexcom G7 is also an option, it tends to be more expensive if you don’t have insurance.

If your doctor agrees, you can pay for the CGM out-of-pocket and still benefit from lower prices. This method usually works, and gets you the best price in the long run. But if it doesn’t work, there are other ways to get a CGM without a prescription from your doctor.

Alternative Method: Using Tastermonial to Get a Libre 3 Without a Prescription

If you can’t get a prescription, another option is to use Tastermonial (tastermonial.com). Through this website, you can purchase a one-month prescription for a Libre 3. After getting the prescription online, you can take it to your local pharmacy or have it sent directly to the pharmacy where you can buy the CGM at a cash price. Use my code “tasterCGM” at checkout 🙏.

Pharmacies like Costco, Walgreens, and Kroger typically offer two-week Libre 3 sensors for about $38-$39. This brings your monthly cost to around $117-$140 for two sensors. Additionally, if you use Abbott’s free trial coupon, you can reduce your first month’s cost to as low as $77.

New Over-the-Counter CGMs: Dexcom Stelo and Abbott Lingo

Recently, CGMs have become available over-the-counter in the U.S. In August 2024, Dexcom released the Stelo CGM, which I now recommend for clients looking for an alternative. You can order a month’s supply for $99 from stelo.com, or get a discounted rate of $89 with a subscription*. For most of my clients, four weeks of using a CGM, combined with professional support, leads to significant improvements in their metabolic health.

One of the advantages of the Stelo is that it integrates with Dexcom Clarity, allowing users to share their data with their healthcare provider for better insights and support. You can even use FSA or HSA funds to purchase it.

Abbott has also introduced a new over-the-counter CGM called Lingo, available for $49 per sensor. Although it’s currently only compatible with iPhones, an Android version is expected soon. However, it’s not clear if it will integrate with Libre View, which means I won’t be able to support it as effectively as other options. Still, it’s a promising new choice for those seeking a more affordable option.

*Subscription rates are not available in some areas like Alaska and shipping times and prices seem to vary. Again, this applies to Alaska residents. (AK always gets shafted with shipping!)

Why Working With a Practitioner Matters

While using a CGM on your own can provide valuable blood sugar data, working with a healthcare practitioner can greatly enhance your results. Instead of collecting raw data without guidance, a practitioner can help you interpret it and make personalized changes to improve your metabolic health. In just four weeks of support, we can identify blood sugar triggers and make strategic adjustments that have a lasting impact.

If you’re interested in working with me one-on-one or through group programs, I support several CGM options, including Libre 14-day, Libre 2, Libre 3, Dexcom G6, Dexcom G7, and Dexcom Stelo. I also support CGM data shared through platforms like NutriSense, Veri, and Levels, if you’re already using those platforms.

Take Control of Your Blood Sugar with a CGM

CGMs are powerful tools that allow you to see, in real-time, how different foods and habits affect your blood sugar levels. Small adjustments based on this data can lead to big improvements in your metabolic health.

If you’ve been hesitant to start, now’s the time to take action. With more affordable options available and support just a call away, you can regain control of your blood sugar and feel empowered in your health journey. I offer free consultations, and in just four weeks, we can make real progress using a CGM.
